Common Split Testing
Mistakes
If you decide to split test our site (against
another site) then it's important not to make the same mistakes which
many newbies make when split testing.
You must use a real split testing script
which sends one visitor to our site and the next visitor to a
competing site.
(Your script must alternate visitors like this in REAL TIME).
It's NOT scientifically accurate to send 1,000 visitors to our site
beginning at 10:00am one day --- and to send another 1,000 visitors to a
competing site later that day (or on another day).
Why is that type of testing a mistake?
...Because different 'hours of the day' can produce a different 'frequency' of
sales. Also, different 'days of the week' can produce slightly different 'sources' of visitors.
There are 'compulsive buyers' who will buy ANY product regardless of the
sales pitch.......and there are 'lookie-loos' who will NOT
buy ANY product regardless of the sales pitch.
For example, in the morning there might be many more 'compulsive buyers'....but later that afternoon
there might be many more 'lookie-loos'.
Or the reverse might be true.......It changes every day.
That's why you must always test both sites TOGETHER at the SAME TIME -- with
each new visitor being alternated
between both sites during the same time period. This balances out
any sudden influx of 'compulsive buyers' or 'professional lookie-loos' to both sites -- as evenly as
possible.
Another NEWBIE Mistake:
"Ending the split test TOO SOON"
When conducting a split test the number of
visitors sent to each site is NOT RELEVANT......and newbies who 'end' a split test
after "500 visitors" (or ANY number of visitors) are literally making a laughingstock
out of their business -- since they are basing their business decisions on
nothing more than flipping a coin (useless data).
To be scientifically accurate you must end the split test after a certain
number of SALES happen, NOT after a certain number of visitors are delivered.
The MINIMUM number of sales for a scientifically valid split test should
be 40 total sales (that includes sales from
BOTH sites added together).
When the sales for both sites add up to 40 total sales -- you can then
'end' the split test.
Of course, if you want extremely
accurate results then you should end the split test after
100 total sales.
However, it's okay to end the test after just '40 sales'.
Anything LESS than 40 sales will produce random AND bogus results
(if you want to use LESS than 40 sales in your split test, then it's better to
just 'flip a coin' to decide the winner -- since your results will be just as
unreliable).
REAL LIFE SPLIT TESTING LESSON
For example, a few months ago we were split testing our
main sales pitch (Page #1)
against a DIFFERENT sales pitch (Page
#2).
After just 17 total sales here were the results:
Page #2 had 11
sales
Page #1 had 6
sales
(so it looked as though Page #2
was going to be the winner).
However, after 214 total sales here were the
final results:
Page #1 had
115 sales
Page #2 had
99 sales
Yet if we had 'ended' the split test after the first
17 sales -- then we would have declared the WRONG
PAGE as the 'winner' (and we would have added the
WRONG page to our site). |
Affiliates who don't understand the importance of split testing are costing
themselves TONS of money each year. This is the single most important
reason why newbie affiliates never become super affiliates.
Please use 40 (or more) sales when split testing....(preferably 60-100
sales if possible).
For example, if one site gives you 24 sales and the 2nd site gives you 16 sales
(40 total sales), then you can end the split test and add up the MONEY EARNED
from each site.
...and whichever site gives you the most MONEY is the winner.
How to Choose the
Right Web Site to Promote:
Remember that a site's "gravity" is not relevant, and neither is their ranking in
the marketplace.
Any vendor who asks you to promote their site simply because they have a higher
"gravity" is trying to dupe you into not using your common sense -- since
gravity doesn't matter.
Likewise, any vendor who tries to claim that you should promote their site
simply because they are ranked higher (than other sites) is also trying to dupe
you into not using your common sense.
The ONLY thing that matters is:
"...which site MAKES YOU THE MOST MONEY during a VALID SPLIT TEST."
It's all about money in this business, and you should always do a
SPLIT TEST to verify 'IF' a
particular site is really making you the most money.
If not, then what difference does anything else make?
If a vendor has a gravity of "999" and
'claims' to have a "20% conversion rate" --
then what difference does that make IF another site is shown to
produce more money for you DURING A VALID SPLIT TEST?
We encourage split testing -- since we don't expect you to take our 'word' for
anything.
